‘Group of Death’ for the Super Eagles at 2023 AFCON will be drawing hosts Cote d’Ivoire, South Africa and Angola in the first round and the question then would be – can they reach the knockout rounds from such a tough-looking section?
Hosts Cote d’Ivoire will be gunning for a third AFCON crown after they failed to qualify for the last World Cup in Qatar.
The Elephants failed to be crowned champions of Africa when they last hosted the tournament in 1984.
Instead, it was the Eagles who reached the final of that AFCON, where they fell 3-1 to Cameroon.
The Ivorians have won the last two head-to-head meetings against Nigeria – 2-0 in a CHAN clash July 2013 and 1-0 a friendly January 2015.
But most Nigerians will recall with pride how the Eagles soared above The Elephants in the quarterfinal of the 2013 AFCON on their way to a third continental title.
In the place of legends like Didier Drogba and Yaya Toure, Cote d’Ivoire now parade the likes of Sebastien Haller, Wilfred Zaha and Max Gradel.
